Indiana’s largest combination utility provider completed the installation and commissioning of a state-of-the-art 12MW, 5.4MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system at its largest generating station. The battery system will provide black start capability for two 77MW natural gas turbines co-located at the site, improving reliability for homes and businesses and the region’s electrical power grid. FlexGen, a leading energy storage technology solutions and services provider, supplied and integrated the battery system.

“Black start is an essential grid reliability function that has historically been performed by diesel generators. This project is another example of how energy storage is displacing older power generation technologies to modernize and decarbonize our nation’s power grid,” said FlexGen Vice President Alan Grosse.
