Durham, N.C., July 28th, 2021FlexGen is nearing completion commissioning of a 100MW/110MWh battery energy storage plant located near Austin, Texas.  The project represents one of the largest and most advanced energy storage projects in North America and will provide critical grid services and capacity to a rapidly growing part of the state.

Commissioning a large-scale battery energy storage project takes teamwork, attention to detail, and great software to enable the full suite of services battery energy storage assets can provide.

“It’s knowing we have some super intelligent guys back at the office monitoring the changes we make real-time in the field that makes you feel like a team,” says Clint Paige, FlexGen Project & Field Software Manager. “No one is going home until we have the bugs worked out and everyone is pulling together to make it happen, whatever it takes.”

It is important to have a rigorous commissioning procedure that’s been certified in the field. Testing begins as soon as the site team has the system wired to report data, so any issues can be investigated immediately. “We have a very comprehensive checklist that we run through before our projects go online to ensure functionality and safety, says Paige, “No detail is too small. It’s what we do day in and day out.”

Communication is critical when testing a site. The company’s HybridOS EMS software allows for seamless intelligence delivery between the hardware, software, and the team. “We use a platform that allows us to correspond while recording our comments so the whole team is kept up to speed on our progress,” says Paige, “It’s helpful to have that backlog of information to guide us on future site launches.”

It’s an exciting time to be a part of the energy transition away from fossil fuels. FlexGen provides resiliency and savings to our clients while at the same time reducing a customer’s cost for power. It’s a new day and FlexGen will be here to meet the challenge.
